Jewelry was important to both men and women. Gold is preferred throughout Mali exept the Tuareg which prefer silver. Wealthy Fulani women were 14 - carat gold earings that are sooooooo heavy that they put red woool or silk to protect their ears.The Dogon women wear 8 small rings on one of their ears that signify the Dogon ancestors.
Fulani and Dogon women rize amber beads. Some beads are made of clay or srone carved with geometrical shapes- especially the whorl. The Mali people frequently were talismans or charms caleed grisgris to ward of evil spirits. Amulets, bracelets, rings are used and cowrie shells are used to decorate jewelry.
